I HEART Writing

Valentine's day is right around the corner! As a computer teacher, I "love" when I can get my students excited about writing by adding a fun tech twist. On this site, students can turn any poem or piece of writing into a fun shape. Use the wrap around heart template for your Valentine's Day writing.

Read Write Think also has a fabulous shape poem interactive that allows students to create and print a poem (or short story) in the shape of a heart.

App Recommendation

First Words Valentine teaches kids about letters, how letters relate to words, and even how to spell words. This app is toddler-tested and approved, with a user-interface designed specifically for the littlest of fingers. The game includes beautiful illustrations, each matched with entertaining sounds and high-quality recordings of letters and words.

Not every snowman wants to be in a snowy wonderland....maybe yours wants to visit a sunny beach!

Then, use your all your knowledge about adjectives to write a descriptive poem about your snowman

With some shiny buttons and a cozy scarf

I bet he doesn't mind smiling in a chilly city street!

Making a Bar Graph

Fifth graders have been learning how to use excel in various ways. We can't believe all the possibilities! One of our favorite new skills we learned last week was how to make a bar graph simply by adding our own data into the spreadsheet. Let's keep practicing, but this time with our own responses. Click on the survey link below and choose one answer for each question. Then, pick one survey question and transfer the results into Excel yourself. Good luck!

It's that time of year! Macy's is holding their annual campaign with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, a great non profit organization that grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. To support this great foundation, Macy's will donate $1 for each letter you write. You can drop off your letter to any Macy's store or submit one online by clicking the picture above. Help Macy's reach 1 million dollars in donation.
