Cyber Awareness Month

As we know, October is cyber awareness month. However, we should always remember to keep cyber safety in mind every time we log on, connect with others online, or post and share with our friends and family. The Internet is an exciting place that allows us to reach others near and far (like I am doing right now!), however, we should remember that with this great "power" comes great responsibility.  Be smart when online and T-H-I-N-K! Ask yourself, is it True? Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? and Kind?

10 Fast Fingers!

This year we will be focusing on our W-P-M...or "words per minute." This is the number that represents how fast we can type. Similiar to a car's speed that is shown by "Miles Per Hour", our WPM tells us how many words we can type per minute. Click on the link below to take a quick one minute timed test and see your WPM. Can you beat your score by the end of the year? I bet you can!

Welcome Back!

We had a great first week back to school! I was happy to see my students again from School #4/5 and School #9 along with some new faces. The first class was a great time to go over some basic computer lab procedures and also let you know about all that is in store for us this year. Just remember the 3 most important computer lab rules and you will have a terrific year. I look forward to a wonderful year with all of you.

Newspaper Final Issue

I want to first thank my amazing and dedicated newspaper club members, Josais, Reema, and Keertana for all their hard work this year. They worked as a great team and together kept school 4/5 up to date on some amazing news and eye catching articles. I wish them the best of luck in middle school. Although I will miss you three dearly, I know you will go on to do great things!

In the final June issue, our fellow newspaper writers left readers with a riddle that may have left many of you stumped. However, if you feel you've solved the mystery, post your answer below with your initials and class (ex: 5M, 4G, 3Scott...) and I will let you know if you were right.

Until next year...  "4 &5 Era"

Californiaaaa Here we Come!

I can't believe that at this time last year me and my girlfriends were sitting on a sunny beach in San Diego, California. From there, me and my friends ventured to the Hollywood sign (which was not easy to get to being that we had to drive up a mountain for that picture), to Rodeo Drive, sandy dunes, and then off to star search in L.A. It was an amazing experience. But I would have to say one of the greatest highlights of my trip was our visit to world famous the San Diego Zoo. It took some convincing since my best friend is not what you would call an "animal person" but we got there and boy was it worth it! When I got home, I was eager to share my experiences with my students and what better way than a VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP. After a little searching online I found the San Diego Zoo for Kids website had amazing virtual experiences for students. With all this cold weather lately (thanks New Jersey) I could not think of a better time to reminisce and take a visit-this time digitally. My first graders enjoyed it so much I had to share it with everyone. Go ahead and click on the link below.

Check out all their live animal cameras. You can see right inside the different animals exhibits including the tiger, panda, elephant, polar bear, and more and this very moment. And best part, no need for sunblock.

Give Credit

Art is everywhere! Whether it is a master painting, beautiful haiku, or inspiring words of wisdom, we all have times when we can truely appreciate the wonderful work of others around us. One thing is for sure though, credit must be given and no one should ever take credit for another's work. This week we talked about plagiarism, copyright, and citations and how important these topics are to our academic success and protection of the work of others. To show our appreciation for other's work, choose your favorite quote from brainyquote and post it below. Remember to put the whole quote in quotation marks AND cite the auther of that quote at the end.

State Websites

Our fifth graders are beginning their research project on the United States. Here are three reliable resources that you can use to gather your information. Remember, never copy, or plagiarize, from a website. Paraphrase the information into your own words.
